LeeeeeeToy

LeeeeeeToy began with a question simple enough to be dismissed: what happens when a toy is treated as a work rather than a product? Founded in Hong Kong around 2015 by Lewa, an advertising designer and lifelong toy collector, and Lego, his partner and a sculptor, the label produced its first figure, Earthly 大地之子, at home — and has kept the operation deliberately small ever since. Every step, from prototyping and sculpting to painting and packaging, is handled by the two of them. No outsourcing, no ambition to scale. The name, with its six *e*s, reads like the Cantonese “叻” (clever), but the founders prefer to treat it as a throwaway shrug: this toy? That lightness is the entry point. LeeeeeeToy is serious, but it refuses to be heavy.

The seriousness lands in two places. First, 100% hand-painted soft vinyl. Lewa paints each figure individually, with the spray deliberately allowed to drift — not for perfection, but to leave the trace of a hand. Second, a continuation of Hong Kong’s 1960s and 1970s history as a world-class toy-manufacturing city. The forms and packaging carry the grammar of old Hong Kong; egg tarts and milk tea are reproduced at 1:1 scale, given limbs and eyes, and food becomes a living cultural vessel. The signature Earthly figure, with interchangeable male and female heads, folds questions of gender autonomy and the human relationship to nature into a single soft-vinyl body — presented, not preached. Works are stocked at M+ and the Hong Kong Museum of Visual Culture, and have been exhibited in galleries across Japan, Taiwan, Thailand, and the United States.
